Think about the role race plays in U.S. political discourse as well as social and political practices and institutions.

We began by thinking about positionality in identity and systems of privilege and oppression that correspond to various forms of identity. We then moved into focusing specifically on the way race has been constructed, understood and used within political discourse–paying particular attention to implicit and explicit racial appeals as well as various political issues that have arisen within this historical and political context of systemic racism. And, we have read and considered Ta-Nehisi Coates’s reflections in his book Between the World and Me. INSTRUCTIONS: This final reflection essay is your opportunity to think back over the various texts (this includes written as well as multimedia) and discussions from the course and formulate your own overview of the most salient aspects of the course for you. What has been most impactful for you and what ideas and lessons from this semester will you carry forward? For instance, how might you continue to think about and challenge privilege in our society? What work can be done to continue to make implicit racial appeals explicit in order to further dialogue about racial justice? How can we expand spaces in which to engage in open discussions about racial injustice in the United States? These are just suggestions–in the end it is your reflection, so let your own ideas guide your essay. REQUIREMENTS: While this is a reflection assignment, and therefore to be a personal essay, it is to be a reflection on the course material and discussions. Therefore, you should include at least five texts (readings and/or multimedia) from the course. You can use texts contributed by class members (and available in Blackboard) as well as texts assigned by me.
