Treat in summary a topic in New Testament studies that interests you, including ideas we have touched on in class.

Some ideas are: Women in the New Testament (e.g., over-all treatment of women, significant women/women leaders, women in a particular book of the New Testament) Religion and cult in the New Testament (early Christian rituals; Christians and Roman cults, etc.) Text Criticism of the New Testament (study of original texts and manuscripts and their change over time) New Testament and Judaism (Jesus and Judaism, Paul and Judaism) Issues in the contemporary study of Jesus or Paul (Historical Jesus; changing perspectives on Paul) Archeology and the New Testament (general or focused on specific findings or sites that are significant) Shape/Nature of early Christian communities (potentially focused on key figures, such as early leadership, Christian prophets, etc.) Theology in the New Testament (Christology; theories of atonement and salvation; eschatology, etc.) Supernaturalism and the New Testament (Healing; Magic; Demonology) New Testament Backgrounds (Dead Sea Scrolls and their impact on study of the New Testament; Jewish history and the New Testament, etc.) The aim is for you to be able to summarize the basics of how this topic enriches our study of the New Testament. If you have your own idea, please run it by me so we can be sure that you are set up for success. 2) Be 3-5 written pages (absolutely not longer), typed and double spaced in a standard 10-12 point font. This page count will not include any title page or bibliography page, and will consist of at least 3 pages FULL of text (half pages will be counted as half pages). 3) Be in clear and readable prose. Not only do I expect you to write with proper grammar and punctuation as befitting academic style, I also expect you to give the paper a “flow”: give an introductory paragraph that briefly describes and outlines what you are studying and why, a body in which you lay out the evidence and discuss it, and a conclusion that tells us what we have learned and how this relates to your stated goals in the introduction, along with transitional statements that help move your paper forward to the conclusion. 4) Demonstrate the use of 3 academic sources not including the Bible or unqualified internet sources (no blogs, no online articles that are only opinion based and do not reference academic source material). You may use the course textbook, but I recommend that one of your sources be a Bible dictionary, such as any of the volumes of the IVP Dictionary Series (Dictionary of New Testament Backgrounds, Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels, Dictionary of Paul and His Letters, Dictionary of the Later New Testament and Its Developments), the Anchor Bible Dictionary, or the New Interpreters Dictionary of the Bible. As for style, APA, Chicago, or Turabian are acceptable formats. The key is consistency and proper citation of sources. In addition to the in-text citations or footnotes, your sources must also appear in a bibliography at the end of the paper (which will NOT count as a separate paper) The paper will be due on the date of the final exam. Those who submit papers early will be granted extra credit. Grading Rubric: The following categories will be marked as successful (2), attempted but not complete (1), or not attempted (0) and will be used to determine your grade (x/10): On topic – did identity a topic, study it, and summarize your findings? 0 / 1/ 2 Proper length (3-5 pages) 0 / 1/ 2 Clearly written – did you write with proper grammar and spelling, also creating a “flow” by proper use of transitions? 0 / 1/ 2 Style – did you use proper academic style, including an introduction, body, conclusion, and using transitions between points or ideas? Use of quality sources – does your paper demonstrate that you researched the topic, using at least 3 proper academic resources? 0 / 1/ 2 Proper citation – did you incorporate your sources into your paper with proper citation, giving credit where due (and thus avoiding plagiarism)? 0 / 1/ 2
