Students start by taking a pre-test of vocabulary level at the beginning of the experiment. The test is based on the Most Common 3000 Word List and the Academic World List by coxhead (2000). Then students upload the required apps ( wordpower, Vocabulary Builder by Magoosh and Quizlet) and use them individually for everyday practice and learning as well as for in-class group exercises. Students are expected to learn 5 days a day and provide the instructor with signs of their progress.
The control group will be given the same words and tests but in paper form and in-class group excercises. The instructor works as an observer and assistant when needed.
The experiment will last for 8 weeks. At the end of the experiment, both groups will take an immediate post-test and the results will be compared. The instructor will use SPSS tests to see the differences and similarities in students performance in both tests in the experimental group and compare the results with those by the control group. Students at the experimental group will be given a survey at the end of the experiment to discover their attitudes towards using the phone applications to learn English vocabulary. The researcher will also interview at least 8 EFL instructors at the English department to obtain information about their attitudes towards integrating and implementing mobile applications in EFL teaching.
