Throughout the quarter, we have explored a range of issues anchored in how women are portrayed in popular culture. In doing so, we identified a thread of misrepresentations that emphasize how mainstream media has co-opted feminism under the guise of “empowerment.” Much of our analysis has been centered on identifying the relationship of the media (film, television, music, etc.) to women and feminism. We have also been exposed to many of the possible explanations as to why the relationship is so complex and dysfunctional at best. The final project is a take home assignment (obviously) that requires you to articulate your own theory of change through a combination of writing and creative visual expression. Your theory of change is an expression of your thoughts and ideas on how to change the address the systemic misrepresentations. Your written responses must: 1) Be 3 – 5 pages in length for the written piece. 2) Define the problem you are addressing (don’t assume the reader knows). 3) Address the following course questions: What are the gendered and sexual repercussions of uncritical, passive consumption of popular culture in our personal, political, and social lives? 4) Cite the core reading (aka “the book”) and a minimum of 3 additional sources. 5) Define your terms to give your analysis the proper context. (For example: pop culture, gender, etc.) 6) Contain YOUR EXPLANATION (aka theory) with supporting evidence as opposed to merely summarizing what the readings have said throughout the quarter. 7) Incorporate your experiences with the themes you are addressing. Additionally, you are encouraged to incorporate research from your previous work in the course to support your ideas; there is no need to “start fresh” or conduct additional research for the final.
