This week you will be reading about social cognitive views of learning. You might be familiar with Bandura and his famous Bobo doll study about observational learning. Social cognitive theory involves these observational learning influences as well as other important influences, such as self-efficacy. You have seen this term several times in previous chapters as it relates to teachers self-efficacy beliefs. The self-efficacy of both teachers and students is an important factor that plays a role in their performance. This chapter as well as the final chapter on motivation, shows us how important student beliefs are in shaping their academic performance. Importantly, though, teachers are not powerless in this equation in fact, teachers play a powerful role in shaping student beliefs either for better or worse.
