1. Native peoples and small scale societies all over the world face an unprecedented array of threats to their territorial rights, health, beliefs, languages and cultures. What are some of the threats to indigenous peoples (explain and describe each one)? How are they different in different regions, nation- states, industries, etc?
The responses of the indigenous peoples have been remarkable for their diversity and originality. What types of resistance strategies and behaviors have been developed? Have any of them been demonstrably effective? What responses have they engendered from governments, capitalists, and the United States? What role, if any, has the world press played in the resistance of indigenous groups?
Looking specifically at the case of the Huaorani, what were the obstacles that they had to face in creating an organization to speak for them in the world? What have been some of the successes and failures of their organization? How has the process of organization itself shaped changes in the very Huaorani society that the organization seeks to protect? Finally, how have cultural differences been important in the organizations dealings with outsiders?
2. The foundation of any new knowledge in any social science is new research. In anthropology that research is usually carried out using participant observation, recording in field journals. You have been keeping an ethnographic journal for a number of weeks now. What patterns of interaction have emerged from your observations? Is there anything that has surprised you as you look back over your entries? If you were going now to propose additional research based on the group you have been examining what would that research be? Write a brief proposal outlining a feasible project. Who is being studied (your answer must clearly define the group and its characteristics)? What is the research question (your answer should include both a discussion of the question and a single sentence research question)? How would the investigation be conducted (methods, access, etc.)? What would be the value of the study to anthropology or to public policy debates (either/or why would it be worth the time and money to carry out the research)?
EXTRA CREDIT: Plan a foreign trip that you would actually like to take. Be as specific as possible where do you want to go? Why? What do you expect to see/do there? Plan a budget, itinerary, and goals for the trip.
