Aging in the Movies:
A film critique in relation to older adultsAnalyze a movie that features aging in an important role. You will examine how gender, sexuality, and race/ethnicity are presented in the film. You will also examine the relationship between older adults and younger characters in the film. The goal is for you to see how the films we watch present the behavior and characteristics of older adults. Most importantly, you will need to think critically that is, you must attempt to set aside your own assumptions (and/or prejudices) and attempt to objectively observe how the older adults are actually portrayed. Do not just read the summary on IMDB or Wikipedia and attempt to write this paper. You must actually watch the movie and take notes during it.For this assignment, watch one of the following films (if youd like to analyze a film not on this list, you must have it approved by me prior to completing the assignment):

Local Color Gran TorinoYou must actually watch the movie for this assignment, even if you have seen it before. You will miss a great deal if you simply rely upon your memory. As you watch the film, you should take note on the following:o
o How are older adults presented in the film? Are there overall differences in their characters, attitudes, or behaviors that can be attributed to age?
o What is the weakness in the movie in relation to its portrayal of aging in society?
o What are the gender roles in the film? (Be specific! Provide examples.) Are they presented in a way that serves to reinforce or combat traditional stereotypes? How does age interact with gender?
o How is sexuality presented in the film? Is it the same for older men and older women as for younger generations?
o Is class represented in the film? How does age interact with class?
o What kind of racial/ethnic diversity is there in the film? (Make a specific count tally of the characters!) How does race interact with age?
o How are older adults overall presented in the film? How many older adults are there in relation to younger adults and children/teens?
o What is the relationship like between older adults and other generations?
o To what extent is family relevant for the older adults in the movie? Community? Other mechanisms of social support?You should NOT discuss every character or event in the movie. Select those that are important to the plots or that strike you as interesting for a discussion.
In your paper, you should describe two themes relevant to older adults that you are most interested in in detail and then relate those themes to relevant aging sociological understanding on agism, class, independent living, race or sexualitieswhichever topics are most relatable to your movie. Your paper should be 5 typed pages. Turn in your paper, along with your observation notes taken during the movie, which are part of your grade.Paper Presentation

Write a 4-6 page reaction paper about your observations Your paper should: Define and discuss culture using our course materials Include a thick description of the location with clear detail of your observations Analyze your observations, identifying four anthropological concepts that fit your observations. Define the concept and analyze how it fits your observations. Include your field notes at the end Examples of some that we’ve studied include: ethnocentrism, ethnicity, reciprocity, kinship, language and communication. You should not use this exact list of four concepts and expect them to fit your observation scene. You may, of course, use others – depending on what concepts are relevant to your observation. We also have two examples to share with you from APUS anthropologists- one from Jennifer Cramer’s fieldwork in The Gambia and one from James Turner’s fieldwork in Mexico. One common misstep is to apply the four subfields of anthropology or to apply the four parts of the definition of culture. Conclude with a discussion of and reflection on your experience of the situation. For example you might write how you felt when you started to detect a pattern in characteristics and/or behavior.
