Socialization is a significant factor that shapes nursing students learning in clinical settings (Ewertsson, Bagga-Gupta, Blomberg, 2017). Whether its a graduate nurse or a nurse beginning work in a specialty area, both will require professional socialization in their new role.

Nursing informatics found the change theory most beneficial when the paper chart was successfully converted into an electronic record. Payne (2013) found that Lewins approach to change management can be very useful for the health care organizations that strategically plan changes in an attempt to meet ongoing heath care demands. According to Payne (2013), nurses attitudes towards change and their willingness to accept and adapt to the electronic documentation can be a barrier to implementation. Ultimately the implementation of electronic health record is essential to enhance the provision of safe, ethical and effective nursing care (Payne, 2013).

The ongoing implementation and advancements of technology in health care has brought many great changes. These changes can cause nurse to have anxiety, fair of the unknown, or failure to provide excellent patient care due to their resistances to change. Medication errors are high and cam lead to devastating consequences of the patient and the nurse. The advancements of technology, using barcode medication administration, there has been a significant improvement in medication errors and patient care outcomes, while improving time management for nurses.
Lewins change management theory also known as Lewins Force Field Analysis, is helpful in understanding the human behavior during a change and its relationship to possible resistance to a change. The sole purpose of the theory is to identify ways to prevent resistance to change. Kurt Lewins change management theory structure can be used as a guide in the implementation of this in the clinical and family practice setting. Lewins theory can provide nursing support through the transitional process, while identifying areas that need strengths, as well as nurse resistance. According to Sutherland, without a proper framework to guide the change, the implementation of advanced technologies may result in nurses using workarounds which will increase the errors that were being addressed.
The theory is composed of three phases. Unfreezing, during this phase the problem identified, development of strategies begins. The moving phase starts the change in nursing practice with support. The implementation of a change produces its desired effect. Refreezing is used to evaluate the change and modify where needed. Far too often we have to adapt to a new change in practice, as nurse it is important that educators find way to avoid resistance, so that there is an ongoing improvement in patient care. Lewins change management theory can assist in implementing change.
