Choose one of the approaches listed below, create a thesis statement, find support for your argument, and write a 4-page paper (in MLA style with a works cited that does not count toward the 4 pp.) synthesizing these sources with your own argument.

Be sure your overall topic is narrow; the topic for this paper is completely open to you as long as you 1) choose one of the approaches below to follow and 2) you write about at least 1 and no more than 2 works from our syllabus. This paper can be a revision, adaptation, and extension of any of the earlier essays. APPROACHES: Critical Approach: To take a critical approach you could choose from a variety of literary criticisms such as feminist criticism, Marxist criticism, post-colonial criticism, and so on. See ILS chapter four for more approaches. For example: An essay using postcolonial criticism could discuss William Shakespeares Othello by analyzing the roles of race, power, and struggle in the play. Historical/Cultural Context: An historical or cultural context approach could include research on the history of the time period or the larger cultural context. For example: An essay using historical context as the basis for research could discuss Henrick Ibsens A Dolls House and research various histories of womens suffrage or larger ideas of womens roles during the Victorian Era. Form/Genre: In order to create a literary argument discussing form and/or genre, you want to start by looking up the origins, beginnings, or history of either form or genre. For example, if you are analyzing a sonnet, understanding the different types of sonnets as well as the history of the sonnet may help you understand why the poet would choose that particular form. Biographical Details: A biographical approach could include research into the authors biography and a discussion of how these biographical details contribute to the poem, play, or short story. If you are writing about Jamaica Kincaids Girl you might research Kincaids Caribbean childhood and create an argument about how her childhood affected/inspired the short story and/or her writing style.Research Guidance: Seek out a variety of perspectives and sources regarding your primary source; do not simply use the first secondary source that references your chosen piece of literature. State your argument in a clear, argumentative thesis statement. Correctly quote, cite, and explain both secondary and primary sources.

What the bleep film in reference to day to day life

What the Bleep Do We Know!? is a new type of film. It is part documentary, part story, and part elaborate and inspiring visual effects and animations. The protagonist, Amanda, played by Marlee Matlin, finds herself in a fantastic Alice in Wonderland experience when her daily, uninspired life literally begins to unravel, revealing the uncertain world of the quantum field hidden behind what we consider to be our normal, waking reality. She is literally plunged into a swirl of chaotic occurrences, while the characters she encounters on this odyssey reveal the deeper, hidden knowledge she doesnt even realize she has asked for. Like every hero, Amanda is thrown into crisis, questioning the fundamental premises of her life that the reality she has believed in about how men are, how relationships with others should be, and how her emotions are affecting her work isnt reality at all! As Amanda learns to relax into the experience, she conquers her fears, gains wisdom, and wins the keys to the great secrets of the ages. She is then no longer the victim of circumstances, but she is on the way to being the creative force in her life. Her life will never be the same. For the What the Bleep Do We Know!? assignment, please consider the following “bleep” of insight from Dr. Joseph Dispenza, the doctor who creates his day using the power of thought, choice, and perception: “We are so conditioned to our daily lives, so conditioned to the way we create our lives, that we buy the idea that we have no control at all. We have been told to believe that the external world is more real than the internal world. This new science, Quantum Physics, is the opposite whats happening within us will create whats happening outside of us. The way our brain is wired, we only see what is possible. We match patterns that already exist within ourselves through conditioning. Example: Native Americans couldnt see Columbus ships because they had no knowledge that these ships existed. The average person considers their life boring or uninspiring because theyve made little or no attempt to gain knowledge and information that will inspire them. Theyre so hypnotized by their environment through the media, through television, through unattainable ideals of physical appearance, beauty and valor that everybody struggles to become but cannot that most people surrender and live their lives in mediocrity. And they may live those lives, and their souls, their desires, may never really rise to the surface. In this infinite sea of potentials that exist around us, how come we keep recreating the same realities? Why cant I change? What am I addicted to? What will I lose that Im chemically attached to? What person, place, thing, time or event, that Im chemically attached to, do I not want to lose, because I may have to experience the chemical withdrawal from it? We bring to ourselves situations that will fulfill the biochemical cravings of the cells of our body. We have to formulate what we want, be so concentrated on it, so focused on it, and so aware of it that we lose track of ourselves, we lose track of time, we lose track of our identity. The moment we become so involved in the experience that we lose track of ourselves, we lose track of time, is the only picture thats real. Everybodys had the experience of making up their mind that theyve wanted something. Thats Quantum Physics in action. Thats manifesting reality.” For your written analysis, I want you to intentionally create one “day” of your life using Dr. Dispenza’s model: (Before you begin, please consider how the character Amanda struggled and eventually succeeded in “re-wiring” her thought processes as she proceeded through her day.) ****** I’m a 20 year old female from California 1. After you wake up, settle your mind — go to a quiet place and do some deep breathing! 2. Examine all the things you need to get done on this day — write them down! 3. Intentionally create the way you want your day to go. Visualize yourself going through your day. Visualize your interactions with others and your desired outcome of events and relationships. Do this for at least 5-10 minutes! Remember to write your visualization on paper so you can refer to it at the end of the day. 4. Pay attention to all the “little things” and “surprises” that occur throughout your day. 5. Pay attention to your attitude during the day. Are you keeping with your plan? Are negative thoughts creeping in? 6. Remain steadfast in your intentions for the day

Sexual harassment is described as unwanted conduct of a sexual nature which has the purpose or effect of violating someones dignity or creating an intimidating, opposed, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment for them.

This educational video is perfect for workplace training because the definitions are clearly outlined in the video with a cartoon commentary to further push the issue. The video explains there are three categories to explain harassment which are verbal, physical, and visual. Quid pro quo is sexual harassment that happens whilst a supervisor or one in an expert position requests intercourse, or a sexual dating, in exchange for not firing or otherwise punishing the employee, or in change for favors, along with promotions or raises. A hostile work environment is when sexual harassment happens via the presence of demeaning or sexual photos, jokes or threats. The irrelevant conduct or behavior must be so pervasive as to, as the name implies. The video could be used as a refresher training to employees. I would add scenarios if I was actually giving this training to individuals at work. The Faragher V. City of Boca Raton case was centered around a college student, Beth Ann Faragher a lifeguard that alleged two male supervisors made offensive and lewd gestures towards her. In 1992, years after resigning, Faragher filed suit under Title VII and Florida regulation, alleging that the two supervisors created a sexually adversarial work environment. Employees have the benefits of reporting sexual harassment to the EEOC and they have the authority to investigate the allegations of harassment covered under the law and can potentially take further action. EEOC also helps to prevent discrimination before any issue arise. https://youtu.be/d0pbHOliQu0 ” This post was in response to the following prompt (Please do not respond directly to the prompt) ” Explain: (1) why you consider this a good, effective video for training; and (2) how you would use it as part of a workplace training presentation. Considerations you should include (but are not limited to): (a) clear definition and explanation of sexual harassment are provided; (b) illustration is instructive and effective for a training discussion because…..; and (c) how type(s) of harassment are clearly illustrated (e.g., quid pro quo, hostile environment, both?).” https://www1.eeoc.gov/eeoc/index.cfm https://www.eeoc.gov/laws/practices/index.cfm https://www.dol.gov/opa/aboutdol/lawsprog.htm#.UJ6l3oUWXdY https://www.eeoc.gov/laws/statutes/index.cfm https://www1.eeoc.gov/laws/other.cfm

Employment Opportunity Commission defines sexual harassment as: any unwanted or unwelcomed visual, verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature, requests for sexually-oriented special favors or exposure to offensive conduct or content.

Please respond to the following student post using the provided attached material and URL (Below) as references. Student Post: ” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxiMESHz9sE The Equal The Air Force has a zero-tolerance policy for sexual harassment, yet it is still very prevalent. We recently had a briefing about sexual harassment in my office. We were informed of our rights, how to report, the types of reporting. We were told stories of intimidation, shame, blame, bribery, etc and these are issues we are still seeing today. We were told about studies from 2017 that found 1 in every 4 women experience some sort of sexual harassment in the workplace. Another article disclosed that 1 in 10 men experience sexual harassment in the workplace. Sexual harassment is more likely to happen in the business industry, such as an office environment. The video I chose started by making the law clear and ensured that those watching understood how to recognize sexual harassment and policies. It gives clear, written definitions of the terms: harassment, hostile work environments, leering, and offensive conduct. With these definitions they also state examples and scenarios to help understand the differences. The video clearly lays out the policies and your personal responsibilities. Sexual harassment can be verbal, written, physical or visual. Examples would be derogatory comments, jokes, slurs, emails, leering, gesturing, sexually explicit materials, unwelcome touching, hugging, etc. The video gives excellent examples of sexual harassment. Even situations where a employee did not the same pay raise as other employees because she refused to go out with her supervisor. It lists clear examples of sexual harassment and how it effects the work environment. Such as how leering creates a abusive and hostile work environment. It has a section of true/false questions that would assist during staff training. It lists civil rights, laws, supreme court cases, responsivities of all members from man agent and below, and proper actions that will be taken. It is in depth but very clear and straight to the point. It does not leave room for question or confusion which is important.” This post was in response to the following prompt (Please do not respond directly to the prompt) ” Explain: (1) why you consider this a good, effective video for training; and (2) how you would use it as part of a workplace training presentation. Three prevalent hazards in the Las Vegas area are terrorism, earthquakes, and flooding.

Due to its economic and symbolic value, Las Vegas has been identified by the DHS as being a high-risk terrorist target validated by video and intelligence captured on raids in the middle-east. In addition, as proven by the Route 91 mass shooting, Vegas is also attractive to domestic terrorist/active shooters. Some of the specific concerns are a Mumbai/Paris-style terrorist attack. Some of the hazard adjustments are: improved networking and training amongst all the Federal, local and military law enforcement & public safety organizations; creation of Joint Task Forces and fusion centers; increased city surveillance via CCTV, hi-definition cameras, facial recognition; acoustic gunshot sensors; CBRN response teams; a half-dozen highly trained multi-jurisdictional SWAT/EST Teams; increased patrolling; community involvement, if they see something, say something programs (i.e. VegasStrong); well-equipped and staffed hospitals and trauma centers to handle mass casualty events. Another major hazard is the threat of an earthquake. Nevada is the third most active region in the US behind Alaska and California. Some hazard adjustments are; seismically retrofit or replace critical facilities and infrastructure that are categorized as structurally deficient and are located in known risk areas or are necessary to use during and immediately after a disaster or emergency; installation of seismic water and fuel valves on critical facilities; Las Vegas has an Unreinforced Masonry Database in the works to identify facilities that are structurally deficient; provide additional emergency power/generator equipment, for new and existing critical facilities to operate continuously; ensure future buildings, infrastructure, highways, bridges and egress roads meet higher earthquake construction standards. Flooding is another hazard Vegas contends with not to mention if the Hoover Dam were to structurally fail. Some of the hazard adjustments are: reinforced and elevated roads and bridges in flood prone areas; upgrading storm drains; installing large flow culverts; constructing overflow retention basins and ponds; build canals and channels to redirect potential water flow from urban areas; revamp community planning designs; dont build on flood plains.” This post was in response to the following prompt (Please do not respond directly to the prompt) “Hazard adjustments assume that people live with a certain degree of threats that can be prevented or mitigated through certain actions. Pick three hazards that are prevalent in your hometown. What hazard adjustments would you recommend based on these three hazards?”
