gendered messages in personal care product:Analyzing Gender through Personal Care Products

When many people shop, the products and the types of products that are available to consumers can feel overwhelming. Just in the last few years, the beauty and personal care industries have created many new products to market and sell to American consumers. For this assignment, you will analyze how these products are gendered, in that they create or reinforce societal ideas regarding what is appropriate for men and women. Please make sure that you have read Chapter 12 before starting this assignment. You will need to physically go to a store that sells personal care products for both men and women (i.e. shampoo, deodorant, shaving stuff, soap, toothbrushes, etc). This can include Target, Walmart, CVs, Walgreens, or another store that you think is appropriate. ** When you arrive at the store, go to the personal care section and carefully look at the store. Here is what I would like for you to observe: Notice the way the store is organized. Look at the different beauty and personal care products. What do you notice? Are there products marketed to women only and men only or products that seem gender neutral. Are the same types of products available to men and women? Are these products the same or different? Pay attention to the packaging and to the packages themselves. What messages do these packages give about what it means to be a woman or a man in todays society? Are there products that challenge gender stereotypes? Are there products that are gendered, but really dont need to be? Take notes on what you observe from the statements above. For this Assignment, please submit the following: 1. Write a summary of what you noticed when you went to the store. Make sure sure to provide details. (Use the points above as a guide/reference). 2. Write an analysis of your findings based on the notes you took from your time in the field and from the questions above. Please make sure to include details of the products, images, or messages that you observed. 3. Your paper should be about 1 1/2 to 2 pages long. 4. Make sure to include at least three of the following terms in your analysis, these terms are located in your textbook and primarily are taken from Chapter 12. When including these terms, make sure that you look up the definition of the term so that they are used correctly. Please write them in bold: gender sex gender roles gender socialization double standard gender identity heterosexism heteronormativity doing gender socialization biological determinism functionalism conflict theory symbolic interactionism

What went well with the briefings? What could have been better? If you were the policy analyst helping to prepare each of those briefings, describe one key action that you would have taken to improve the outcome of each.

Go to the White House website, www.whitehouse.gov, and perform a search on briefings. Review briefings from the Briefing Room and Press Briefings. Select two briefings published in the last 12 months. Defend each of your proposed actions, explaining how they would help each of the briefings.

What behaviors atypical to your sex did you enjoy doing or secretly want to do? (For instance, your professor enjoyed learning to crochet from his grandmother but stopped when teased by other boys.)

If you do not cite sources, you will be charged with plagiarism and receive a zero on the assignment, resulting in an F in the course if found guilty by the TTU hearing process described in the student handbook. Paper will be graded on the basis of –grammar: 20 pts. –following instructions below: 20 pts. –quality or response to prompts: 60 pts. Thoroughly proofread. Write a 1.5 to 2-page paper in which you do the following. Use the paper template available under the content tab. Make sure to insert your T# and name in the header. Address each of the following issues. This is a very short paper, so you will need to be very concise. Begin your essay by completing the following statement and then responding to the prompts in manner that reveals nothing you would want private but addresses the issue in a scholarly way. Paragraph 1: My original birth certificate identified me as [male/female/intersexed]. While growing up, [what behaviors typical to your sex did you enjoy doing? (For instance, your professor is male and enjoyed playing baseball).] Paragraph 2 Using a pseudonym (i.e., a made up name for the person), what friends did you have who displayed atypical gender behavior, and how were they treated? What harm was their behavior causing? (Your professor had a male friend Tommy who, in his 30s, had surgery to have a female anatomy and became Mary. When we were kids he did nerdy things like wear Star Trek clothes, and he loved to play piano but never did anything distinctly feminine. I once heard another boy call him the weird kid who always said, Lets play Star Trek. While Im not aware of behavior ever hurting anyone, the boy who called him weird now is in prison serving life without parole for killing his wife.) Paragraph 3 Identify at least three important things you learned/experiences you had in class and describe what made them stand out. Paragraph 4 (+5, 6 if you choose) Briefly compare and contrast each of the articles in the reading. What was the tone (kind/harsh, etc.)? How are they different in terms of vision of gender?

Write a formal paper connecting the points in Quinns speech to themes in Ishmael and themes that we have covered in our class thus far. In doing so, touch on all of the highlights listed above by: Supporting or refuting Quinns position about hope and our ability to reach a tipping point. In other words, do you agree with Quinn?

After reading Ishmael, mindfully read Daniel Quinns speech titled Bioneers (https://www.ishmael.com/Education/Writings/bioneers.cfm), which highlights: Quinns position on whether or not there is hope for the future and the idea of a tipping point Some of the issues that have and/or are currently plaguing us that brought about a call to action The importance of you and education in general Changes in our culture over the past 60 years As you are reading this speech (and this assignment description!), highlight and annotate, as this will keep you from having to read it more times than necessary. If not, share your own position and support it with reason. Incorporate the importance or lack of importance of education depending on your position. Either expanding on (through your own research) one of the issues that Quinn mentions or by writing about a similar type of issue/threat that he doesnt cover. Regarding this issue, what are we (communities, individuals, nations, etc.) doing to improve our situation? Research using several sources and cite when appropriate. Are these efforts to improve successful? Why or why not (what is your position based on your research, knowledge, and thoughts?)? Explore cultural changes over the past 60 years. Highlight where we are at now (culturally and related to environmental issues) compared to where we were at other times over the past 60 years. Be creative and not only show that you have read Ishmael, the speech, and have researched beyond these sources, but also express your position on these matters. In other words, this isnt simply a book report.

Write a foreign policy case-study in 2,000 words. A foreign policy case-study is a report on a specific foreign policy issue, which outlines its challenges and proposes recommendations.

A foreign policy case-study should include (not necessarily in order): Examples of foreign policy issues (thats the case-study) are : Donald Trumps foreign policy to withdraw from the TPP, or the Cuban missile crisis, the UKs decision to intervene in Iraq in 2003, the UK’s COIN in the Helmand (Afghanistan), or Chinese foreign policy to militarise the South China Sea etc. You are advised to use a foreign policy of a state and one of the states or actors (the US, the UK, the EU, Latin America, China) Structure: The word count for each section suggested below is indicative, but you should not exceed 2,000 words in total (excluding the list of sources): An introduction – 350 words. Your introduction should include the context and importance of your case-study and a statement of the theoretical approach you choose and why. This should be stated explicitly, for instance “The foreign policy brief explores the US decision to blockade Cuba in 1962 through the lens of actor-specific theory because the bureaucratic politics model, developed by Graham Allison (1969) reveals the many interests and agendas that ultimately lead to the President Kennedy’s decision”). The introduction should also include your argument (“This brief will argue that the decision to blockade Cuba was imprudent and risky but that it was the product of a bargaining amongst multiple players”, and a clear outline of the rest of the foreign policy case-study, for instance “This brief will demonstrate this argument by first examining the 1962 Cuban missile crisis and the context in which the crisis arose. I then provide a critical review of this policy, its challenges and failures, and finally offer a set of recommendations…”) A summary of the policy – 300 words (this should be neutral and objective summary of the policy) A critical review of the policy 600 words (highlight a set of challenges or failures , is this policy successful? for whom? why is this policy not successful according to your theoretical approach?) Policy recommendations 500 words (how would you seek to repair the failures highlighted in the challenges? Limit recommendation to two or three). Conclusion – 350 words (clearly separated from the main body of text, summarising the argument, reflecting back on the challenges and the recommendations) Where is the theory part? The theoretical approach you choose should filter in your section 3. Critical review of the policy and section 4. Recommendations. You should think like the theorist of the approach, e.g. if you choose neorealism, you should ask: ‘what would a neorealist think about this policy? what would a neorealist recommend to solve the issue?’. If you choose a post-structuralist approach, you should ask ‘how would a post-structuralist study this issue? what are the challenges a Critical theorist would highlight? and how would they respond to this issue?” and so forth. How many sources do I need? You must engage with and reference the core readings corresponding to the theoretical approach and the core readings corresponding to the region/actor selected (from Week 7,8,9,11). You must read and reference also at least 2-3 supplementary readings in the Reading List online. You can use newspapers articles if the issue you selected is contemporary for facts, but not argumentation.

The influence of exercise in treating depression in today’s young age adult on UW campus.

What is the purpose of your research? In relation to the current state of knowledge, is your research exploratory, explanatory, or descriptive? Why and how so? What are your research population and population size (if known)? Why? What are your units of analysis and units of observation? Why? What are your sampling type and sampling strategy? Why? What is your sample size? Why? What is your mode of observation? Why? What are your variables, indicators, and levels of measurement? Why? Explain and justify your variable conceptualizations and operationalization? Why are your choices valid and reliable? (Be honest about both strengths and weaknesses.) If you have them, what you are your independent, dependent, and control variables? Hint: Your methodology section does not have a word requirement. That is because you cannot quantify ahead of time what it takes to deeply explain and logically, convincingly justify your research design. Instead of word count, you should ask yourself: Have

Assume that the original qualifier was certainly; indicate whether the qualifier changes as we move from a simple, static, uncontested argument to a complex, dynamic and contested argument.

(Note: Refer to Demonstration Exercise 3 located at the end of Chapter 1 for criteria 1-3.) Create an argument map based on the influence diagram presented in Case 1.3 and complete all the criteria provided in the demonstration exercise, beginning with this claim: The U.S. should return to the 55- mph speed limit in order to conserve fuel and save lives. Include in your map each of the following: warrants, backings, objections, and rebuttals. (Note: Refer to Demonstration Exercise 3 located at the end of Chapter 8 for criterion 4.) Apply the argument mapping procedures presented in Chapter 8 to analyze the pros and cons (or strengths and weaknesses) of the recommendations that the U.S. should not intervene in the Balkans. Write a one (1) page analysis that uses critical thinking to assess the overall plausibility of the claim: The conflict in Bosnia is somebody elses trouble. The U.S. should not intervene militarily. Complete an argument map to illustrate your analysis. Appropriately incorporate at least four (4) quality sources. A quality source can be either grey literature, such as a news article, or scholarly, such as peer reviewed works. In the case of public administration, government websites are appropriate quality resources.
