Come up with a question(s) that you can make an argument about for either a social issue, moral issue or ethical issue discussed or touched upon in Freedom Writers.

Follow a specific argument model and development structure, either Rogerian or Toulmin;
Logically and coherently arrange a longer essay of 5-7 pages that expands beyond the traditional five-paragraph model, using appropriate transitional language to guide a reader;
Synthesize a variety of viewpoints to develop an individual argument position;
Develop and analyze arguments using logic and other appeals.

For example, if youre interested in the complex social inequities represented in Freedom Writers, the questions could be, How are social inequalities depicted in Freedom Writers? What similar representations of social inequalities are present in our own society? How could it be explored?

Once you have identified this question, give 3-5 answers to your question(s); these will become your supporting points. Then, create a thesis based off this question. Be sure to thoroughly research this question and include at least five sources.

In writing this essay, you are to consider an audience that is in support of and those that are opposed to the argument you elect to forward. Using the principles of either Rogerian argument or Toulmin logic to structure your essay, argue your position within the selected topic.Objectives:
Content/Organization:

o Consistent awareness of purpose and audience. You should maintain the academic voice (third person perspective) and avoid the casual interruption of personal opinion.

o A clear, identifiable thesis detailing the position that you intend to introduce to your audience. Remember the goal of the Rogerian-style argument is cooperation and not confrontation. Thus, keep in mind that you want to appeal to your audience as a whole, and present a solution that will be accepted by the majority.

craft an Analytical Report on a topic of your choice. The report may be a Causal Analysis (Why Does X Happen?); a Comparative Analysis (Is X or Y Better for Our Needs?); or a feasibility analysis (Is This a Good Ideas?).

For example, you might write a feasibility analysis that explores the feasibility of your future career (or anticipated future career). I strongly encourage you to choose a topic relevant to your field or interests. My major is Human development and family studies(e.g. past topics include: A Causal Analysis on declining bee populations; a Comparative Analysis on which kind of tractor to purchase for the family farm; a Feasibility Analysis on installing a new parking structure at SDSU). Audience: In addition to your instructor, the audience for your report includes your classmates and the SDSU community, as well as other readers whom you think would benefit from your report (i.e. other students majoring in your field; professionals; researchers, etc.). Its a good practice to first draft an audience and use profile, deciding on your level of technicality from that profile. If the report is highly technical, adjust your writing to a lower level of technicality for your readers. Your report should take one of the following forms: Causal Analysis: Why does X Happen? Why is it so difficult to find a parking spot during peak times on campus?
Designed to reveal a problem at its source
The body of report should:
o Identify and evaluate all possible causes, and rule out unlikely ones
o Select the most probable causes and evaluate them
Conclusion should identify definite (or immediate) causes
The effectiveness of your argument will depend on the quality of evidence you present, as well as on your ability to explain the links in the chain of your reasoningComparative Analysis: Is X or Y better for our needs? Would geothermal or solar power be better alternatives for reducing the Universitys carbon footprint?
Designed to rate competing items on the basis of specific criteria
The body of the report should:
o Identify the criteria
o Rank the criteria (in order of importance) and explain reasons for rankings
o Compare items according to criteria
The conclusion should recommend the best option(s) based on criteriaFeasibility Analysis: Is this a good idea? Is installing solar panels on the dorms a feasible/practical way to reduce energy consumption/costs?
Designed to assess the practicality of an idea or a plan
The body of the report should:
o Provide background needed (for example, why are you studying this issue?)
o Follow up with details, data, and criteria
o Explain why your recommendation is the most feasible among the choicesAn effective report will contain:

As an entrepreneur, you are interested in expanding your business to either Germany or Australia. As part of your initial analysis, you would like to know how much minimum investment in needed to enter each of these markets.

To have an appropriate estimate, you hire a consulting firm to perform an initial investment analysis. The consulting firm provides a short report concerning the minimum investment needed for each country. Taken from the report, the minimum investment amounts enclosed are: 24 million EUR or 30 million AUD. To make a clear comparison by using current exchange rates, you must convert each currency to U.S. dollars and suggest which country provides the better investment.2. Each answer to every essay question must be at least two pages long, 12 Times New Roman, and double-spaced.
Make sure your document is a Microsoft Word document with a .doc extension.
Essay questions must be answered in a clear and well-organized paper. A clear and well-organized essay has an introduction that tells the reader what is ahead, a few paragraphs that discuss the topic in question, and a conclusion that summarizes what was discussed. Paragraphs must follow one another in a coherent and logical order. Sentences within each paragraph must also follow one another in a coherent and logical order.
Writing a good answer to an essay question requires that you explain yourself fully. To do so, you must assume that the reader is not familiar with the topic in question. So be concise, but explain yourself fully. Make sure you answer the question.
Since the purpose of the writing assignments is to test your understanding of the material and your ability to think critically about it, your essay must also demonstrate some independent thinking. A good paper is clear and straightforward, accurate when it attributes views to other writers, and contains thoughtful critical responses to the text(s) it discusses.
You should come up with your own ideas, examples, and your own way of elaborating, criticizing, and/or defending a certain view. Merely summarizing what other writers have said is not enough.
Dont try to write a literary masterpiece. Use simple and straightforward prose. Keep your sentences and paragraphs short and use familiar words. Help the reader follow your line of reasoning by using transitional phrases, such as because, since, for, thus, hence, therefore, it follows that, nevertheless, however, but, on the one hand,/on the other hand, etc. Make sure you use these phrases correctly.
Make it explicit when you are expressing your own views and when you are reporting the views of others or definitions and examples discussed in other texts. The reader should never be in doubt about whose views you are discussing. When you make such an error you run the risk of committing plagiarism.
Direct quotations should be used sparingly. It is seldom necessary to quote more than a few sentences. Quotations should never be used as a substitute for your own explanations. And when you do quote an author, you still have to explain what the quotation says in your own words.
