Literary Analysis: The Cask of Amontillado

Essay #4 Literary Analysis The fourth essay for the semester is a literary analysis which must incorporate outside research. We have spent some time in class discussing analysis as a rhetorical process as well as choosing appropriate and solid sources of outside information. We have discussed the fact that analysis is the process of breaking a thing down in order to gain a better understanding of the way something, in this instance a piece of literature, works or functions. We have been doing this in class for the last few meetings, in the way weve been discussing various pieces of literature and looking at how they function in terms of communicating their meanings to us as readers. For this essay you are to choose a topic for which you can construct literary analysis of at least 1,250 words (4-6 pages) that correctly incorporates material from at least two (2) appropriate and credible outside sources. You are free to choose any of the works of literature that are listed on the syllabus for this essay that interests you, but you ARE REQUIRED TO CHOOSE FROM THE WORKS LISTED ON THE SYLLABUS. If you write this essay on anything other than the list of titles on the syllabus, your essay will automatically fail; there are NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS. You MUST choose something from the selections on the syllabus from RHT 102 Readings or one of the pdfs found on Blackboard. Also, remember that this assignment is NOT to simply write a summary of the piece you are writing on. If you submit an essay that is mostly a summary, it will not be sufficient enough to earn a passing grade. Remember that as we have been talking in class, the point of this essay is to be making an argument about how a piece of literature works: how it conveys its meaning or makes its point or whatever statement it is trying to make. A summary is what happens; an analysis is how something works. For your outside sources, it is recommended that you use the various databases available through the Triton College Library, and that you do not simply Google a work and use the first responses that appear. Sparknotes or similar sources are NOT research, as they mainly provide summary information; definitions you may need also do not count as research: if you are discussing irony in a work and need to look up a definition of irony, you didnt do any research; you did the bare minimum necessary to discuss irony in the work. Failure to make use of credible sources will result in grade penalties; as always, if you are in doubt or have questions, ask me or bring it up in class. Because this essay requires outside sources, be sure that you are following MLA citation standards. We will peer edit this in class on Tuesday, November 20th, and it will be due via Blackboard by midnight of Tuesday, November 27th. PLEASE NOTE THAT THESE ARE DIFFERENT DATES THAN THE ONES LISTED ON THE SYLLABUS. No late papers will be accepted. According to the Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI), a student enrolled in Rhetoric II must meet the following conditions on this essay in order to receive transferable credit for the course: – Incorporate information from two or more acceptable outside sources, – Complete both of the essays requiring outside research (this one and essay 4) – Earn a grade of D or higher on both, and – Earn a grade of C or higher in the class If these conditions are not met, a student cannot receive a passing grade for the semester regardless of final point total. http://library.triton.edu/home

write a 10-page document regarding a law enforcement agency of your choice. This agency can be from the US or be international, but must exist at the present time (no historical law enforcement agencies). While you are welcome to choose any contemporary law enforcement agency, I strongly suggest picking an agency that you would consider working for, or one that is responsible for an issue that you are passionate about. Your class paper should explicitly address the four following areas: 1. Identify and describe a law enforcement agency 2. Describe the mandate, mission, or major goals of the law enforcement agency that you have selected 3. Identify and describe a problem or a challenge that this law enforcement agency is currently encountering. 4. Using evidence and the materials from this course, suggest a policy or other strategy that could be used to address the problem that you identified in section 3. Based on the evidence that you have found, conclude whether this strategy would be likely to successfully address the issue you have chosen All papers should be written using double-spaced size 12 times new roman font, and be on paper with 1-inch margins. It is at your discretion as to how much space you spend on each of the four areas of this paper, however the information and space needed to adequately address the final two areas should be greatest.

In Week 3, you will submit a Literature Review; this draft will include the title page, abstract, literature review, and reference list (without annotations). Review the research proposal outline presented in the Research Proposal Guidelines area of the course. You will need to have the main ideas here (such as your research question and key points of the literature review). It should be written in third person (eliminate personal anecdotes and first-person language). This is a rough draft, so it is not expected to be perfect; it should still be complete, and proofread. If the proposal is riddled with grammatical errors I will simply return it to you and require you clean it up before I will grade it (and you will lose points for a tardy submission). If you do not have access to a writing center and writing is not your strong suit, contact another student in the course to request a paper exchange to swap papers and help each other proofread. Please submit by Sunday of week 3 at 11:59 pm CT. Assignment 3: Methodology/Conclusion In Week 4, you will submit a plan for conducting the research and collecting analyzing the data. Describe the methods for data collection and analysis and a conclusion for your proposal and submit it to the dropbox by Sunday at 11:59 pm CT. Be sure to reference the Research Proposal Outline presented in the Content area of the course. Enlist an outsider to help edit/proof read this for you. This outsider can be a member of the Columbia College campus community or the Writing Center. It can also be a member of your family or some outsider who may not have any sociological knowledge, but will be able to help make sure your paper logically flows, is well written, and has limited spelling and grammatical errors. This should include your complete methods (sample, methods, data analysis, conclusion, reference list, and appendices with copies of consent and instruments). Before submitting your paper, refer to the guidelines at the beginning of the syllabus and ask yourself the following questions: Is your research design (methodology) explicit? Are your justifications for your choice of research design explicit? Are you using your sociological imagination? In other words, are you taking it big? Are you analyzing your research question in terms of larger social and historical circumstances within which the phenomenon occurs? Are you using APA formatting style (in the body of the text as well as on the reference page)? Have you eliminated spelling and grammatical errors? sources need to be peer reviewed

An ethical problem in your current or past organization. Make sure there is an ethical component to the problem.

You will have think carefully to best use the concepts from the course to help you answer the questions. Make sure you consult the grading rubric as you prepare your mini-paper and prior to submission. The grading rubric will be used to grade your mini-paper. In narrative form, address the following areas: What is the nature of the ethical breakdown? What about do you question ethically? What about the situation do you find acceptable? How common is this problem? What guidance does the organization provide? What action would you recommend? It is strongly suggested that you use these questions as sub-heads in your mini-paper to ensure you address each area and that the instructor can locate specific material expected to address each of the questions.

a magical thinking like GHOSTS or something else about magical thinking

There are three movements to this paper: 1st movement: prove the problem exists ( you must first demonstrate that the belief/practice is prevalent enough to be worth consideration 2end movement: Demonstrated the error ( here you must carefully enumerate why/how this belief/ practice is incorrect and misguide. This is a the heart of paper.) 3rd movement: explore the reasons for the continued belief/practice ( the 3rd movement is the place where you argue why this belief/practice its adherents; what community does it form, what powe or secret knowledge does it promise, what dream or hope does it promote? In other words why is its particular mode of magical thinking so successful? On what does it play? Ignorance? Vanity? Suffering? Something else?)

Construct constitutive and operational definitions for any three (3) of the actions and outcome variables listed in the shaded box under Review

Question 3 at the end of Chapter 6. (Note: The box includes Program expenditure, Equality of educational opportunity, Energy consumption, etc.) (Note: Refer to Chapter 6 Review Question 5 for criterion 2.) 2. Identify three (3) policy problems listed in the shaded box under Review Question 4 and determine an appropriate indicator or index that would help determine whether each of the identified problems are being solved through government action. Justify for position on each. (Note: The box includes Work alienation, School dropouts, Poverty, etc.) (Note: Refer to Chapter 6 Review Question 13 for criterion 3.) 3. Construct valid rebuttals to the following argument using at least four (4) threats to validity: (B) The greater the cost of an alternative, the less likely it is that the alternative will be pursued. (W) The enforcement of the maximum speed limit of 55 mph increases the costs of exceeding the speed limit. (I) The mileage death rate fell from 4.3 to 3.6 deaths per 100 million miles after the implementation of the 55-mph speed limit. (C) The 55-mph speed limit (National Speed Law of 1973) has been definitely successful in saving lives. 4. Appropriately incorporate at least four (4) quality sources. A quality source can be either grey literature, such as a news article, or scholarly, such as peer reviewed works. In the case of public administration, government websites are appropriate quality resources. Note: Wikipedia, SparkNotes, and similar websites do not qualify as academic resources. What should teachers do to ensure that students are learning positive behaviors from each other?

This week you will be reading about social cognitive views of learning. You might be familiar with Bandura and his famous Bobo doll study about observational learning. Social cognitive theory involves these observational learning influences as well as other important influences, such as self-efficacy. You have seen this term several times in previous chapters as it relates to teachers self-efficacy beliefs. The self-efficacy of both teachers and students is an important factor that plays a role in their performance. This chapter as well as the final chapter on motivation, shows us how important student beliefs are in shaping their academic performance. Importantly, though, teachers are not powerless in this equation in fact, teachers play a powerful role in shaping student beliefs either for better or worse. As you read the chapter this week, think about how the classroom can be structured to maximize observational learning and self-efficacy. How can teachers work with students to encourage positive self-efficacy beliefs? Please use informaiton from this textbook Chapters 8-10 and the links below to complete this assignment. Thank you Educational Psychology, 13th Ed by Woolfolk. Make sure you have the right edition, as the textbook has been updated recently. Chagall lesson plan.pdf El Nino lesson plan.pdf The chapters in this unit discuss how students learn and how teachers can leverage these findings to help make the material more likely to be retained. Based on what youve learned from these chapters, choose one of the following lesson plan links from the bottom of the prompt. First, identify whether any strategies or techniques from Chapters 8-10 are already included in the lesson plan. Then, add in at least two specific techniques or strategies that are grounded in the concepts from the chapters in this unit.
