1. Task. Write a 1500 word report (+/- 10%) on your own self-assessment. This will include the following sections (see the following sections for details): 1. RESULTS AND INTERPRETATION (Around 300 words). Your results from two personality tests taken on this module and an interpretation of these results. These tests will be provided either in class and/or made available on Blackboard in the first three weeks of the semester, these will be indicated as those to be used in CW1 and you are not allowed to use any other tests. Bullet points are recommended. You do not have to write an introduction. 2. ACADEMIC CRITIQUE (Around 600 words). DEVELOPMENT PLAN (Around 600 words). A targeted development for a given job scenario (detailed requirements below). Please note: You may well have taken one or more of these tests previously, and we strongly encourage you to compare your results now with any other previous tests. We are especially interested in your critique, and the results themselves may give you some valuable insights. 2. Marking criteria Your work will be graded on the following criteria (approx. 25 marks each but as in the real world all are essential): * Critical thinking and objectivity: throughout your work demonstrate that you dont automatically believe the results, that we need to interpret tentatively * Content and insight: throughout, especially the Development Plan (details below) * Application of theory (especially in the critique: demonstrate understanding of reliability/validity and bring in academic criticism from well regarded sources). * Format: throughout your work, clear language, well formatted citations, clear and frequent paragraph breaks and sub-headings. Section 2. A critique of the tests and the testing methods (600 words in total) This is where you comment on the accuracy, validity and reliability of the test and the results. Two themes are recommended here. Within each section just give the main points of your analysis. The test method: how clear were the instructions, was there sufficient time, were you distracted etc. The test itself: was any of the language unclear, how were the final results calculated, were the tasks logical, were the choices clearly distinguishable etc this is where you need the references to outside sources to support your arguments. A brief comment on the results (50 words approx.): are they true for you? Section 3. A targeted development plan (600 words in total) Task: The requirement is to assume that a potential employer in the marketing industry will give you these same tests in 6 months time with a view to recruiting you onto their trainee management programme. They wont see your current results. Assume you really really want this job. NOTE: DO NOT FIND A DIFFERENT JOB ADVERT (YOU WILL LOSE MARKS IF YOU DO), JUST BASE YOUR IDEAS ON THIS SPECIFIC SCENARIO, AND IF YOU MAKE ANY PLAUSIBLE ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT IT YOU NEED TO JUSTIFY THEM BRIEFLY. 1. List the key personality test results the company is likely to find desirable for the post in terms of the tests you took. List them in bullet points (e.g. SH and IM in Belbins model). 2. Outline the key differences between your results in each test and the desirable ones. 3. Explain what you can do to narrow the gaps in the time available, as follows: 3 a: How to change your personality. Heres an example using MBTI: The company would probably like managers to be sociable (E rather than I) but it is unlikely that I can change how I am in the 6 months available, given my clear I result, but I can start next week by joining a London Meetup group 3 b: How to target specific items in each test which will skew your results towards the more desirable characteristics: Perhaps you scored not sure between I and E on the MBTI test, but decided on balance you were more I. Assuming the company would prefer I over E, you could identify the I statements on the test and choose those. Its still you, youre just emphasizing those parts of your personality which are desirable for the job. Please note, we are not asking you to explain how to fix the results, its simply about emphasizing more those elements of your personality which already exist. In the Belbin, for example, Belbin himself states that any of your less preferred roles will become prominent if there is a lack of that role in the team overall. So moving from, say 5 points to 9 points isnt such a leap. And given the margin of error of some of these tests this could easily be allowable. Of course if you score 0 on a role which you think will be desirable then you need to point this out.

Please follow paper instructions carefully. Use your own words as much as possible and appropriate references only on source provided in the paper requirements. ONE: Where Are You Going? Visit the Peabody Essex Museum (https://www.pem.org/), in person or online and discuss your experience. Points to include in your discussion: Name and location of museum; link to museum’s website; information on the permanent collection, current exhibits, talks/lectures, and other educational/cultural programming. In addition, answer these questions: 1) what is the most interesting or unusual thing about this museum; 2) would you want to visit it in person – or did you – why; 3) what is the most striking piece of art in the museum; and 4) find something in or about this museum that you can relate back to the class, to something we’ve studied – an artist, a work, a time period, a style. (Must be 275-300 words). TWO: The Stranger the Better Find a work of modern art (approximately 1900-1960); the stranger, the weirder, the better; a work that perhaps someone might ask the question, “Why is this art?” Or, “my cat could do that.” However, the work you choose has to be one that you can champion, meaning, that you have a good answer to the question, “Why is this art?” Your answer will explain why the work is art and also what makes it an example of modernism (include a definition of modernism in your own words). In addition, make sure to provide any necessary context for the work and any interesting biographical information about the artist that is relevant to the piece. Some possible modern artists include Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Wassily Kandinski, Piet Modrian, Otto Dix, Frida Khalo, Jacob Lawrence, and Jackson Pollack. (Must be 275-300 words). THREE: Live on Bread & Music? After, reading Jennifer K. Sweeney’s book How to Live on Bread and Music, discuss what you find to be the theme of the book as a whole, the over-arching idea that Sweeney is examining in her collection. Then choose one poem to focus on. Discuss what you think the poem is about, what it might mean, or how it makes you feel, as well as how the poem you chose adds to the overall theme or idea of the book as you see it. Finally, connect the poem to an aspect of the course description and objectives below. (Must be 275-300 words). Course Description This course introduces students to the humanities art, literature, music, theater, myth, philosophy, and religion and the influences people use to determine value in their world. Attention is given to Western and non-Western cultures and to the ways these civilizations are interconnected, with emphasis on how the cultural, religious, and philosophical ideals of a civilization are reflected in its artistic expression. In addition, through critical thinking, students will be encouraged to explore the relationship between their belief systems and the beliefs of their society. Learning Outcomes interpret works of art, music, and literature from different cultures and time periods; examine the connections among different art forms from the same time periods; evaluate the relationship between art and society; analyze those philosophies and religions that form the basis for societal belief systems throughout the world; identify enduring philosophical questions that demand personal reflection; develop critical thinking skills. In addition, the course aims to introduce students to historical and cultural backgrounds necessary for understanding their own society by exposing them to important ideas and events that have shaped and continue to shape their world; develop students ability to understand and appreciate cultures different from their own, as well as grasp interrelations among world cultures; enrich students education by encouraging them to see connections among different academic disciplines.
