Choose a timely real-world example of rhetoric and explain how and why is the example rhetorical.

Prompt: Choose a timely real-world example of rhetoric. Then answer the following:
1) How and why is the example rhetorical?
1a. What rhetorical characteristics, as outlined in our reading and lecture, are present?
1b. What specific quotes/discourse from the example highlight each of these characteristics?

2) Second, answer one of the following questions*:

-Is your example rhetorically sound, neutral, manipulative or deceptive? Give evidence.
-What motives are present (use Fisher article)? Are they concealed or clear? Are there any voices/ views left unheard?
-How is this example epistemological? What knowledge does it bring us to?
-How is this example ontological? Does it inform us on ‘better’ ways to live? How is this supported?
-How is this example utilizing the ‘humane’ characteristic of rhetoric (use Nichols article)?
-Which theorists’ definition (Plato, Kennedy, Nichols ‘s articles, etc.) connects most to the example?

*You do not need to and should not try to answer all of the questions. They are just examples of some ways to approach and conclude the prompt.

Remember: The purpose of this assignment is to get you to think through the material carefully. It is designed to solicit your feelings on the topics we have covered in class.
I already know what the readings say – I want to hear what you have to say on the topic. You should, of course, reference concepts from class. Use quotes from the reading to support your argument; do not summarize the reading.

I do NOT need an attached bibliography page since there is NO outside research needed or wanted. When quoting from the Reader, simply include the page number in the citation. Example = (Reader, 49). When quoting from your example, simply put the website/ source used in parenthesis.

Formatting parameters: 1-inch margins (not standard/ must manually set), double-spaced (do not double-double space between paragraphs or between your header and essay), 12-pt. font, 3 pages in length, Times or Arial font. Please do not go beyond 3 ½ pages; this is maximum.

Your thought essay should be:

1. Thoughtful – don’t write just to complete the paper. Rather, have something to say. There are instances of rhetoric all around you, and I know that you have things to say about them. Political ads, commercials, television programs, speeches, and even music videos all provide instances of persuasive communication. Use this space to really engage the world around you. Writing just to complete the assignment (usually very vague) will not only result in boring both of us, but likely a poor grade.
2. Responsive – Try to address the prompt as directly and narrowly as possible. I can tell when you are writing to fulfill the page requirement, and it makes for poor writing. The more you focus on the prompt and your response to it, the more helpful it will be as an assignment in aiding your engagement with course materials.
3. Engaged – focus as much as possible on the course material. Wikipedia and online dictionaries have a lot to say on these topics, but this course is not about these online resources. It is about your course materials – you paid the money for the texts, so use them. Although I do not want an additional bibliography page, I do want proper in-text citations.
4. Developed – turn your musings, thoughts, and ideas about the prompt into two to four main, coherent points. If this is difficult, try taking a step back and thinking more clearly or thoroughly about the assignment.
5. Clear – be sure your essay has a direct thesis statement, and is organized in a way that makes your argument easy to follow. This includes having topic sentences and developed paragraphs, as opposed to a series of observations. Your examples used should be concise and very specific.

I will unload the articles for you.

Discuss the impact of stereotypes depicted in the media on individuals and society, using at least two contemporary examples.

Assignment 2: Essay—Prejudice and Discrimination

In social psychology, one of the main ways of studying how people interact with each other and their group behavior is through observation. One aspect of observation is through understanding the media. We live in a world of mass media, with blockbuster movies, dramas, situation comedies, and twenty-four-hour news channels. Add to this product placements and commercials. It could be said that what we watch or read is a reflection of who we are as a culture, but is that true? Movies like GoneWith the Wind (1939), although spectacular cinematic experiences, were steeped in racial stereotypes. However, that was long ago. The world has changed considerably since then. Right? You expect racial, ethnic, and gender stereotypes in the media to be a thing of the past. Consider movies like Scarface (1983), The Birdcage (1996), and The Waterboy (1998) and the popular drama series The Sopranos(1999–2007)—all had main characters portraying a particular group in a stereotypical manner. The fact is that stereotypes still do exist.

The purpose of this assignment is to examine stereotypes on television to see if it promotes prejudice and discrimination. Pick a television program of your choice; it should be something current (from the last ten years) and can be a drama or a situation comedy. Using what you have learned from your readings, analyze the program and answer the following questions in your essay:

What is the overall storyline and setting of the television program? Who are the main characters?
Does the program portray the main or supporting characters in a stereotypical manner in terms of race, ethnicity, or gender? If yes, describe the stereotypes and explain how the stereotypes might promote prejudice and discrimination. If the program does not seem to promote stereotypes, explain how it was able to avoid doing so.
Discuss the impact of stereotypes depicted in the media on individuals and society, using at least two contemporary examples.

Write an argument that persuades an audience to accept your explanation of the causes of your chosen phenomenon

ENGL 1302

Writing Assignment 2 – Causal Analysis

For this assignment, you will use a causal argument to explain the causes or consequences (or both) of a trend, event, or other phenomenon.

Write an argument that persuades an audience to accept your explanation of the causes (or consequences) of your chosen phenomenon. Within your essay, you should examine alternative hypotheses or opposing views and explain your reasons for rejecting them.

You may imagine your issue either as a puzzle or as a disagreement. If a puzzle, your task will be informational as well as persuasive because your role will be that of an analyst explaining causes and/ or consequences of an event to an audience that doesn’t have an answer already in mind. If you see your issue as a disagreement, your task will be more directly persuasive since your goal will be to change your audience’s views so as to align more closely with your own.

In the introduction to your essay, you should introduce your trend, event, or phenomenon; explain its significance; provide any necessary background; and state your thesis. Body paragraphs should focus on analyzing major and minor causes and/ or effects, presenting supporting evidence, and examining and refuting opposing viewpoints. The conclusion should reinforce the essay’s main points and include a strong concluding statement.

Papers should be a minimum of four pages long, typed, double-spaced and carefully proofread. Adhere to MLA guidelines for formatting and include both parenthetical citations and a Works Cited page. You must use a minimum of three secondary sources. Do not use a cover sheet. The heading is the same as used in the first paper and goes in the upper left corner:

Student Name
Course. Section
Instructor Name
Due Date

My order that you did on Immigration protest in California was great and I want to elaborate on the issue using the previous paper you wrote for this English paper. This paper needs to have a chain of events as described below. Also, I need a strong Thesis statement. Even though Republican Reforms are in place to allow immigrants to stay in the US………

Here are additional notes from the instructor:
X does/ does not cause Y
Attempts to find causes and/or consequences for any given phenomenon. May focus on causes, effects, or both

Causal Relationships
Main causes: The most important cause; usually used as a key argument supporting the thesis
Contributory causes: less important causes
Immediate causes: occurs right before the event, the most obvious cause
Remote cause: occurred further in the past
Causal chain: Event A  Event B  Event C  Event D…and so on

Post-Hoc Reasoning
Also known as Faulty Cause/Effect. Incorrectly assumes a causal relationship just because one event closely follows another.

Structure

Introduction: introduces topic (trend, event, or phenomenon),
explains topic’s significance,
provides any necessary background,
states thesis
Body: Focus on analyzing major and minor causes and/or effects
Presents supporting evidence
Examine and refute opposing viewpoints
Conclusion: Reinforce the essay’s main points; include a strong concluding statement.
You are a great writer! Thank you.

List and describe two or more binaries you see going on in this clip.

First, read the reading to get some idea (John Ley and the chapter from ‘Representation: Cultural Representations and Signifying Practices’ -Stuart Hall) , than watch this youtube video -Argo Official Trailer #1 (2012) Ben Affleck Thriller Movie HD

After watching this clip , choose and answer 2 of the questions. please be specific.

1. List and describe two or more binaries you see going on in this clip. Remember binaries are either/or constructions that define meaning by establishing difference–remember the concept of negative identities, that we are defined by what we are not? examples of binaries are black and white, male and female, civilized/uncivilized, etc. Provide one example from the clip where you see this binary represented.

2. Analyze the relationship between the two “terms” or elements of the binary. Is one term privileged, or set up as superior, over the other? Does one side of the binary get represented as “normal,” while the other is deviant? What groups are associated with each term of the binary? Give an example from the clip where you see one term of the binary privileged over the other.

3. List the denotative meanings of a particular scene of interest (just describe the signs in a brief scene, like embassy or wall or turban or glasses or people running), then do a more indepth reading of its connotative meanings (what are the myths and meanings culturally associated with those signs?).
(e.g. a pastoral setting for cigarette smokers, a gentle rocking chair in a lovely room for motherhood)? I use “myth”, also known as “second-order signification,” in the sense in which it is used by Roland Barthes: as a sign which refers to a broad, general cultural meaning; see his Mythologies. An experience or event or thing is mystified when a broad cultural meaning obscures the particulars of that experience, event or thing; this obscuring usually covers up or ‘disappears’ contrary or inconvenient facts, as in the examples I have given. To demystify, pay attention to the particulars, the specifics, the concrete reality, with all its blemishes and contradictions.

Ideology: A Brief Guide

As are all of my posts on this course, this document is open to change. If you have any suggestions (additions, qualifications, arguments), mail me.
Ideology is a term developed in the Marxist tradition to talk about how cultures are structured in ways that enable the group holding power to have the maximum control with the minimum of conflict. This is not a matter of groups deliberately planning to oppress people or alter their consciousness (although this can happen), but rather a matter of how the dominant institutions in society work through values, conceptions of the world, and symbol systems, in order to legitimize the current order. Briefly, this legitimization is managed through the widespread teaching (the social adoption) of ideas about the way things are, how the world ‘really’ works and should work. These ideas (often embedded in symbols and cultural practices) orient people’s thinking in such a way that they accept the current way of doing things, the current sense of what is ‘natural,’ and the current understanding of their roles in society. This socialization process, the shaping of our cognitive and affective interpretations of our social world, is called, by Gramsci, “hegemony;” it is carried out, Althusser writes, by the state ideological apparatuses — by the churches, the schools, the family, and through cultural forms (such as literature, rock music, advertising, sitcoms, etc.)
While the concept of ideology is most generally associated with power relations, we have to keep from being too simplistic. Power is not a unitary force or phenomenon, nor an exclusively ‘political’ phenomenon. Power and power relations are woven throughout all our practices and ideas — power is exercised in every relationship, group, and social practice, and it is not necessarily detrimental (what if a mother decided she did not want to operate in a power relationship to her newborn?). On the other hand, one must not forget that social order relies, in varying degrees, but ultimately, on the ability of one person or group to coerce another person or group, and that the basis of Law, however rationalized, is the authorized use of force.

Some conceptions of ideology de-emphasize the power aspect and see ideology as the structure of assumptions which form the imaginative world of groups. Ideology, writes Althusser, is “a representation of the imaginary relation of individuals to the real condition of existence.” Further, Althusser writes, ideology creates us as persons: it “hails” us, calls us into being.

According to Marx, ideology naturalizes, it historicizes, and it eternalizes. That is,

ideological structures appear to be natural, “according to the order of things” (naturalization);
ideological structures appear to be the logical conclusion to an historical development(historicization);
there is an assumption that now that this (natural) state of affairs has been reached, things will be that way, barring regression (eternalization).
E.g. “Democracy is the political system most in keeping with the nature and needs of humans; history has been an evolution of political forms towards democracy; once states have all reached democracy, all they have to do is avoid reverting, there is no ‘farther’ to go in terms of political organization.” We assume that democracy is the political system best suited to the nature and aspirations of humans, we see history as a movement towards democracy, we assume that once all nations have achieved democracy they will continue to be democracies forever, unless they erode. These assumptions are ideology.

Any ideology will contain contradictions, will repress aspects of experience, will ‘disappear’ that which tends to contradict it or expose its repressions. Ideology’s cultural activity will include the construction of pseudo-problems which are given pseudo-solutions — e.g. our culture’s obsession with stories about ‘love’ relations which are ‘solved’ by individuals realizing the true worth of the other, as if these issues were really central to our most fundamental human concerns, our moral and mental health, the justice and equity for which the world is calling out; all sorts of moral and social problems get ‘disappeared’ in the process.
