Salandro knows his company needs to improve productivity and quality. Salandros roommate in his old college days is now a quality consultant who has agreed to help out. Assessment of Bernhard Schlink’s “The Reader”

Students will prepare one assessment of Bernhard Schlink’s The Reader. Your paper should be three to five double-spaced, typed pages in length.

The assessment will be due in class on Monday, October 6, 2014 (Section 03) and Tuesday, October 7, 2014 (Section 02). Late assignments will be subject to a 1 point per day penalty (out of a possible 20 points) for every day it is late. No comments will be made by the instructor on late papers.

Please choose from one of the following topics:

1. Is Michael’s love for Hanna meant, in part, to be an allegory for his generation’s implication in their parent’s guilt? What might this allegory reveal about the nature of citizenship and responsibility?

2. When Michael consults his father about Hanna’s trial, does his father give him good advice? What are the ideological assumptions that inform this advice? Are they adequate for the situation that Michael faces?

3. Why does Hanna twice ask the judge, “What would you have done?” Is the judge sympathetic toward Hanna? Should he be? What is the role of individuals in conditions such as that of Hanna when to act other than she did would almost certainly have resulted in her death?

4. Michael comments that Enlightenment law (the foundation of the Canadian legal system as well as the German one) was “based on the belief that a good order is intrinsic to the world” (p. 181). How does his experience with Hanna’s trial influence Michael’s view of politics and the law? Is he right?
