Find out as much as you can about your topic in order to fully understand its causes, features and effects, so that you can clearly explain it to your audience. You may have to persuade them that it is a problem. Then, come up with a reasonable, feasible solution to the problem and encourage your readers to act in order to help resolve the problem. The problem you choose should be narrow and specific so that you can explain it in detail. Solutions may be short and/or long term, as long as they are specific and practical. Use your research to show why this is a problem and to show why your solution would be the best.
2. Before beginning your research, make a list of what you need to find out in order to make your argument. Do some prewriting and initial investigation.
3. Collect and read your research. You need at least three outside sources with at least one direct quote, summary or paraphrase and in-text citation per source. All three of these must have a personal author and be print-based sources from the University Library of Columbus. You may use additional non-published or World Wide Web sources, but at least three must be published and have personal authors.
4. Do an audience analysis, and turn it in on the specified due date.
5. Map, plan, or outline your essay and the points you want to cover. Depending on your topic, your points will vary, but you will almost all have the following needs in common:
Define the nature of the problem.
Establish its existence by explaining what has caused or led to the problem.
Explain the extent of the problem.
Explain its effects and why it is an issue that needs to be solved.
Warn readers about future effects if no solution is offered. Apply prior experiences from other communities to this section.
Establish common ground with the reader and show that youve taken the concerns of others to heart. Explain how others view the topic and the concerns of those people when it comes to trying to solve it. Address opposing arguments, and anticipate your audiences questions and concerns.
Before you propose your solution, address other alternatives first. Show youve put some thought into your solution by acknowledging and critiquing other possible solutions to your topic. Explain your reasons for rejecting them. Your goal: make your solution appear to be the best solution.
Propose a plan of action. Make sure its clear to your readers not only what you would do but how you would do it. Clearly describe your solution so that your audience can imagine what it will be like. Address the potential arguments your opposition might have to your solution. Let your audience know why they would be satisfied with your approach.
Conclude with a call to action. Encourage your audience to accept your views and join the cause. Use projection: show your audience what your community will be like if they do or do not adopt your solution. Or ask them to take simple steps to bring about the change you desire. Help them continue the fight.
