Current Educational Reform Paper: In this paper, you will analyze the selected recent reform controversy, “Standardized Testing”. In this paper, students will identify how the controversy reflects historic debates about the purposes of schooling and the role of the teacher and analyze whether the reform promotes or undermines social and educational equality with respect to race, class, gender, language, culture or disability. Please do not submit a paper that simply retells the story. Students will support their arguments with independent research. You will be judged on your demonstration of the following (each on a 1-5 point scale): a) Understanding and analyzing debates over the purposes of schooling with insight into how this current controversy reflects the historical debates over the purpose of schooling. b) Understanding and analyzing debates over the role of teachers with insight into how this current controversy reflects the historical debates over the purpose of schooling. c) Identifying and applying course concepts and on theories about diversity and social and educational inequality. d) Using clearly-relevant evidence presented in the course and students independent research in support of thesis (your argument about current reform). Students are required to use scholarly research articles published in academic journals, including (but not restricted to) the American Educational Research Journal, Sociology of Education, Anthropology of Education Quarterly, American Journal of Education, andTeachers College Record. Short news or opinion articles in either metropolitan newspapers or a publication such as Education Week do not count as professional research sources. For your paper to score a 4 or above in this area you must cite/use at least two scholarly sources in addition to course readings; For your paper to score a 5 you must cite/use at least three scholarly sources in addition to course materials, textbook, etc.
