A controversial issue in the field of Greek archaeology is the value of Greek art. Works like the marble copy of the Doryphoros in the MIA are very expensive ($2.2 million in 1986), and with the attribution of vases to named artists (either real or made-up names), vases by artists such as Exekias and Euphronios have been studied, collected, and purchased in the same manner as paintings by Monet and Picasso. Some scholars, notably Michael Vickers and David Gill, claim that ancient pottery had very little value. A few, such as John Boardman and Robert Cook, argue otherwise, and your reading in this unit attempts to use what data we have to suggest some less rhetorical answers. Summarize the rebuttals by Boardman and Cook. Do you find them persuasive?
